Sacker & Partners LLP scoops award for Employment, Pensions, Benefits and Tax Team of the Year for the second year running at British Legal Awards
Sacker & Partners LLP, the UK’s leading specialist pension law firm, won the award for Employment, Pensions, Benefits and Tax Team of the Year for the second year running at the prestigious British Legal Awards which took place in central London earlier this week.
The firm was praised for treading new ground when it acted on behalf of the trustees of the telent pension scheme to protect the security of its pension fund following the approach of a buy-out vehicle. To ensure that the interests of the members were adequately protected, Sackers pushed boundaries with the Pensions Regulator, arguing successfully in the face of stiff opposition, for the appointment of three independent trustees.
Sackers was also applauded for the work of its specialist Dispute Resolution Unit which successfully secured a ruling with potentially wide-ranging ramifications for other pension schemes that could run into millions of pounds. It successfully argued against Her Majesty’s Commissioners of Revenue & Customs (“HMRC”) that its client, independent trustee firm Capital Cranfield Trustees, was entitled to claim a VAT refund on expenses incurred on behalf of a scheme in wind-up.
Senior partner, Ian Pittaway commented: “It’s particularly pleasing to win this award for the second year running against such stiff opposition. It shows that our role as a specialist pensions law firm is highly valued, not only with our clients but also with important independent opinion formers. Having recruited our 50th lawyer in 2008 the firm is larger and busier than it has ever been.”
This year Sackers has won a string of pensions awards including Niche Firm of the Year at The Lawyer Magazine Awards, Pensions Lawyers of the Year at the UK Pensions Awards and the pensions law award at the Pension & Investment Provider Awards (PIPA).
